The distribution-level view: a two-sample test
Deciding whether real and generated samples come from the same distribution.
The objective is to approximate an unknown data distribution through the generator function. Given i.i.d. observations from and from , how do we decide whether ?
We use a two-sample test with a discrepancy : null hypothesis , alternative . Ideally when they are equal. We design an estimator with a rejection threshold : if , conclude the distributions differ.
Seen this way, the discriminator is a learned two-sample test and the generator tries to make the test fail.
