Frame a question with four components
Before calculating anything, say who you mean, what you will measure, when you will measure it, and why the answer matters.
Population: who the result is about. Variables: what is actually measured. Period: when measurements and outcomes apply. Purpose: the decision the answer is intended to support. For a comparison, also specify the comparator.
"Students seem disengaged" is incomplete. A better question is: "Among the 2026 entry cohort, are recorded submissions during teaching weeks 1-4 lower than for the 2025 cohort at the same stage, and is the difference concentrated in particular programmes so support can be targeted?"
This operationalises engagement using submissions. It does not establish that submissions fully measure learning. The period, collection process and comparison must be comparable across cohorts.

The lecture's claim ladder becomes a written answer: report the comparison, explain its limits and identify a useful next check.
Practice problems
Supplementary study questions on the lecture concepts — not verbatim exam questions. Each answer counts toward spaced review.
1. Conceptual understanding
Definitions and distinctions.
What is missing from “Are students disengaged?”?
Which is an operational measurement of engagement?
2. Application
Apply the concept to a case or calculation.
Which phrase specifies a target population?
Why is comparing week-4 logins with full-term logins difficult?
3. Interpretation and limitations
Evaluate assumptions and justify conclusions.
Which addition states why an analysis is useful?
A team uses assignment submissions as engagement. What should it explain?
Explain it in writing
Self-checked, not marked. Write a few sentences, then compare with the example answer. Your writing is saved as you type.
Show an example answer
For example: Among first-year students this term, what share of recorded course results are below 50 points, and which courses should be reviewed for extra support? This states the population, measure, period and purpose.
Check: did you answer the question, use evidence or working, and avoid claiming more than the evidence supports?

A week-4 count and a full-term count cover different opportunities to act. Their difference may come from timing rather than a real difference between cohorts.
